5 Things You Missed: Raiders Training Camp, Day 12

Twelve days in, and the picture is getting sharper for the Las Vegas Raiders: Kirk Cousins isn’t budging, Maxx Crosby isn’t slowing down, and the receiver room behind Dont’e Thornton Jr. just found its next name. Source: Camp notes via Sam Warren, The Athletic (@samwarren83).

1. Kirk Cousins is still the guy, and Fernando Mendoza hasn’t changed that.

Cousins took every first-team rep again today, connecting well with Tre Tucker on an out route, though he got rattled by pressure a few times and threw short. Despite Mendoza’s strong preseason opener, head coach Klint Kubiak has made clear the starting job hasn’t moved. This remains the single biggest storyline of camp because it shapes the entire offense’s identity heading into Week 1.

2. Maxx Crosby is a problem for everybody, including his own tackles.

Crosby bull-rushed rookie DJ Glaze into Cousins’ lap to force a short throw, added a sack, batted down a pass, and blew up multiple run plays. It’s the same disruptive form that’s made him one of the league’s best edges, and it’s a great sign for a defense that needs him to anchor the front.

3. Malik Benson keeps making a case for real snaps.

Working with the second team, Benson connected with Mendoza on a play echoing the Arizona preseason comeback route and high-pointed a deep ball over cornerback Hezekia Masses for a big gain. With Dont’e Thornton still working back from injury, Benson’s opportunistic camp has him firmly in the mix for a rotational role, not just camp filler.

4. The cornerback room is starting to sort itself out.

Darien Porter took every CB2 rep opposite Eric Stokes with the ones, while Masses and Decamerion Richardson rotated with the twos and Jermod McCoy worked with the threes. That’s a clearer pecking order than we’ve seen most of camp, and it’s worth tracking as final roster cuts approach.

5. The Raiders bolstered their defensive line depth this week.

Las Vegas placed LB Brennan Jackson on injured reserve and signed veteran Foley Fatukasi for experience up front. Neither move is glamorous, but both matter for a defensive line room that took a hit in the preseason opener and needs bodies heading into joint practices with Houston.

What matters most in the long run is the Cousins-Mendoza dynamic. Everything else, from receiver depth to the cornerback pecking order and defensive line additions, matters. But who lines up under center in September will ultimately determine this team’s ceiling.
