A pessimist's guide to the 2024 Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia’s offseason was full of big-name free agents and promising draft picks, but Eagles fans wear their pessimism with pride. Here’s what they should worry about in 2024.

Coach

On paper, few head coaches can match Nick Sirianni’s resume. His 34-17 record with Philadelphia gives him the highest win percentage in franchise history and third-highest among current NFL coaches.

In reality, Sirianni’s team fell apart in 2023, losing five of its final six regular-season games and topped it off with an embarrassing 32-9 loss to Tampa Bay in the playoffs. The team’s terrible finish cost two coordinators their jobs, but the offense they ran last season was his.

It’s worth noting that Philadelphia didn’t really take off until Sirianni relinquished play-calling duties to Shane Steichen midway through the 2021 season. Without Steichen, now head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Sirianni’s game plans became stale and predictable, as 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey demonstrated to the Manning brothers during a "Monday Night Football" broadcast.

After vowing to adopt a CEO-style approach to the 2024 season, the fourth-year head coach will let new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore run the offense. If he does well, Moore could be in line for a head coaching position in 2025, forcing Sirianni to find his third offensive coordinator in as many years.

Coordinator

While Moore will run the offense, Vic Fangio takes over the defense after serving as Miami’s defensive coordinator last season. With 36 years of NFL experience, the veteran coach brings a lot to the table, but according to some of his former players, his people skills could be better.

When asked to compare new DC Anthony Weaver to Fangio, Dolphins safety Jevon Holland said, “It’s the fact that he’s a good person that makes a difference.“ That’s harsh but Holland isn’t the first player to speak ill of Fangio.

When Miami released veteran cornerback Xavien Howard, Jalen Ramsey praised his former teammate on social media while taking a shot at his former coordinator.

Surely, Fangio’s old school style isn’t for everyone, but at least one Eagles player seems comfortable with him so far. When asked about Fangio’s coaching style following a recent OTA practice, defensive tackle Jalen Carter said, "I love Vic, man. Old school man, he's fun to talk to.”

That’s good news for now, but OTAs are a far cry from the regular season. Fangio’s relationship with players is something the team should definitely monitor throughout the year.

Quarterback

Like his head coach, quarterback Jalen Hurts appeared slow, indecisive and unable to make adjustments during the team’s long losing streak. He finished 2023 as the league’s 14th-leading passer but had one or fewer touchdown passes in 14 games.

He also threw a career-high 15 interceptions and lost four of six fumbles. If not for his 15 rushing touchdowns, Hurts would have been a liability and without retired center Jason Kelce “pushing tushes” in 2024, that number should go way down.
