One day after the Los Angeles Rams' preseason opener victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, something happened.
Aaron Donald had his second tryout this summer, the latest development in his decision on whether to return, according to the NFL's transaction wire.
Ever since the Rams acquired reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, the spark to play football returned, prompting him to engage in consistent workouts that have circulated on social media. Donald's first tryout came a few weeks ago in a non-padded session.
The 10-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year had been testing himself to determine whether he can come back and be the dominant form he was before retiring in 2024.
Head coach Sean McVay was asked about Donald during his press conference on Saturday, saying the team is not putting any pressure on the franchise's career sacks leader to make a decision.
"He's put himself in a position to be able to say yes or no," McVay told reporters. "I think he's earned that right to have clarity on that. We're not at that point quite yet. We have some loose things where we've identified you know dates that we'd like to be able to hit. But what I don't want to have is any sort of unnecessary pressure on him if there's some unforeseen circumstances.
"We've had some tentative discussions behind the scenes. There's a lot of stuff, without getting too granular with it. ... He knows himself in terms of, 'Am I able to stack back-to-back days? Am I able to do some of the benchmarks' that he's set out for himself. I feel great about our football team as it currently stands, and I know he'll add value if he decides to come."
The Rams are the preseason Super Bowl favorites, with elite talent across the roster, an offense that could repeat as the NFL's best in total yards and points scored per game, and a defense capable of being historic. Adding Donald would only make game plans more frustrating for opposing teams.
The Rams open the regular season against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. We'll see if Donald is back by then.
