The Minnesota Vikings entered their preseason opener hoping to get a first real look at how their rebuilt defense would function with Jamal Adams patrolling the secondary. They walked out with a gut punch instead. The veteran safety suffered a season-ending injury in the first half, a setback that immediately reshapes Minnesota’s defensive plans before the regular season even begins.

NFL Network reported that Adams went down while breaking on a pass, planting awkwardly before collapsing to the turf. He tried to get up but could not put weight on his left leg, and trainers quickly signaled for assistance. Minnesota ruled him out before halftime, and further evaluation confirmed the worst: Adams will miss the entire 2026 season.

What Adams’ injury means for Minnesota’s defense

The Vikings signed him knowing his injury history, but they also believed his toughness and instincts still translated at a high level. Even in limited action with Seattle last season, he flashed the downhill aggression that made him one of the league’s most disruptive safeties earlier in his career. Minnesota planned to use him as a hybrid defender, part box safety, part blitzer, part matchup piece.

Without Adams, Flores will likely turn to a rotation. Josh Metellus becomes the most natural candidate to absorb the bulk of the snaps, and his versatility gives Minnesota options. Camryn Bynum, who has steadily improved each season, will also take on a larger role. The Vikings could explore adding another veteran before Week 1, but the market is thin, and replacing Adams’ style is nearly impossible.

Vikings must regroup quickly

Minnesota has spent the offseason trying to build a defense that can complement its evolving offense. Losing Adams does not derail that mission, but it does force the Vikings to find answers faster than expected. They will lean on depth, coaching, and a next-man-up mentality, but there is no sugarcoating it. This is a major blow to a team that believed Adams could help set its tone.
