The New England Patriots needed a legitimate No. 1 receiver. They just got one of the best in the business. A.J. Brown is headed to New England after the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles finalized one of the most talked-about trades of the 2026 NFL offseason.
The deal had been building for weeks, with both sides holding off until June 1 to manage the salary cap math involved. Brown, who turns 29 on June 30, walks straight into the top spot in New England's receiver room. Philadelphia gets a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round selection in return and sheds a significant future cap burden in the process.
The Eagles didn't wait around to prepare for life without Brown either. They traded up for USC receiver Makai Lemon in the first round, brought in Dontayvion Wicks from Green Bay and added Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore in free agency. Philadelphia has been building toward this for a while.
By waiting until June 1 to complete the trade, the Eagles get to spread Brown's $40 million cap hit across two seasons instead of absorbing it all at once. According to Spotrac, Philadelphia still takes on dead-cap charges of $21.8 million in 2026 and $27.1 million in 2027.
For New England, the cost is manageable early. The Patriots are on the hook for $7.04 million in 2026 before the number climbs to $10.9 million in 2027, $17.8 million in 2028 and $23.6 million in 2029. The number that stands out is 2030, when a void-year charge of $53.5 million hits the books.

Brown came into the league as a second-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2019 under then-head coach Mike Vrabel and has been one of the most productive receivers in football ever since. His 8,029 receiving yards and 56 touchdown catches both rank fourth league-wide over that stretch.
He and Cincinnati Bengals star Ja'Marr Chase are the only two players to put up at least 1,000 receiving yards and seven or more touchdown catches in each of the last four seasons.
Brown also owns the two highest single-season receiving totals in Eagles franchise history, posting 1,496 yards in 2022 and 1,456 yards in 2023.
At 6-foot-1 and 226 pounds, he's built to win in contested situations and holds up when things get messy. His 37 first downs on pressured-dropback plays say a lot about what he brings when a quarterback needs a bailout. Drake Maye posted the best completion rate in the NFL in 2025 at 72% and now has a genuine go-to target to work with.
