There were a lot of rookie quarterbacks in the 2024 season who turned heads, whether it was Jayden Daniels with the Washington Commanders or Drake Maye and the New England Patriots. One player who exceeded expectations, though, was Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix, who led the team to their first postseason appearance since 2015.
For any young quarterback in the NFL, it's a common notion that the biggest leap comes from Year 1 to Year 2, with a full offseason in the league helping spur along their development. Based on what we're hearing from training camp practices between the Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals, Nix is making that leap.
The Broncos and Cardinals have been practicing against each other this past week in preparation for this weekend's Week 2 preseason game, and many defenders have raved about what Nix is doing so far, from leading the offense to making no-look passes and dissecting Arizona's defense.
"Bo, you can definitely tell he made the Year 2 leap," Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson said after practice, via KCNC-TV's Romi Bean. "Just comparing what I saw last year with him as a rookie -- he was out there [today] making no-look throws and stuff."
Wilson isn't the only one with kind things to say about Nix. Six-time Pro-Bowl defensive lineman Calais Campbell also was impressed with what he saw.
"He has what it takes," Campbell said. "He's poised. He made quick decisions -- he didn't hold the ball long at all."
Coming off of their first postseason appearance since 2015, the Broncos are entering the 2025 season as one of the most popular picks to make a run, much like the Detroit Lions did a year ago. With Sean Payton's third year in the program, Nix's second year under center, and one of the best defenses in the league, the pieces are there for a successful season.
On top of that, Denver's schedule isn't something that causes much concern. The AFC West plays intraconference games against the AFC South and the NFC East this season.
If Nix can continue to progress like he did a year ago, then the Broncos could be a special team this season and make a run toward the Super Bowl. Early returns from those who have seen Nix up close are certainly positive.
