HC Ron Rivera: Commanders 'have a lot to offer' a franchise QB

There continue to be more than subtle hints that the newly named Washington Commanders will go big-game hunting as they look for a quarterback upgrade over the likes of Taylor Heinicke and Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason. Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said in January that "nothing is out of the question" regarding the sport's most important position, and a report surfaced last week Washington could even include 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young in a trade for somebody such as Green Bay Packers starter Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks if they're available.

Rivera recently spoke with The Athletic's Ben Standig and attempted to sell his team to signal-callers who may be looking for greener pastures ahead of the springtime months.

"We’d like to believe we would be a viable option for a lot of (quarterbacks)," Rivera said. "We understand what the capital will take to bring a type (of) player like that here. We believe we have a lot to offer."

Rivera compared Washington's current situation to what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went through in 2020 and what the Los Angeles Rams experienced this past season after those franchises made big moves for proven quarterbacks.

"If you feel like you need to get those pieces, and you can get those pieces using draft capital or whatever capital you have in terms of player trades and all that good stuff, why not do it?" Rivera added during the interview.

While Rivera also said Washington will "more than likely have an opportunity to have a rookie on the roster" at quarterback, the coach clearly is thinking much bigger as the start of the new league year on March 16 approaches.
