Commanders update crest for championship titles

For better or for worse, depending on one's point of view, the former Washington Football Team officially rebranded as the Washington Commanders earlier this month. However, the club's fans couldn't help but notice that the team's new crest that included years for the five championships the franchise has won throughout its history were for the dates the titles were won and not the seasons linked with those triumphs.

As Nick Shook pointed out for the NFL's website, the Commanders righted that wrong on Tuesday.

"We have begun the process of updating our crest online and with vendors," Washington announced in a statement released Tuesday. "For fans that have pre-ordered a jersey, the jersey will feature the updated crest and will begin shipping by early July. Licensees are in the process of creating new merchandise with the revised crest and the new merchandise will be in market as soon as possible."

While "Crestgate" wasn't all that big of a miscue in the grand scheme of things, one would think somebody associated with the Commanders would've quickly realized NFL championships are always associated with the years of seasons. Shook noted the Los Angeles Rams won the NFL title for 2021 even though Super Bowl LVI was played earlier in February and well past New Year's Day celebrations.

In the end, though, this seems to be a "no harm, no foul" matter.
