NFLPA president blasts league's plan to handle coronavirus

NFL Players Association president JC Tretter has voiced his criticism of the league's plans for training camp and preseason, saying that the NFL is not adequately adjusting to the reality of the nationwide coronavirus pandemic.

"Like many other industries, football’s resistance to change is based on the belief that the best way to run things is the way we’ve always run things," Tretter wrote on the NFLPA website. "That pervasive thought process will stop this season in its tracks."

The NFL is reportedly planning to reduce the preseason to two games instead of four. Players, however, have made it clear that they don't want the preseason to happen at all, as players are unlikely to risk their health for a game that doesn't mean anything.

"We don't want to merely return to work and have the season shut down before we even get started," Tretter wrote. "The NFLPA will do its part to advocate for player safety. We will continue to hold the NFL accountable and demand that the league use data, science and the recommendations of its own medical experts to make decisions. It has been clear for months that we need to find a way to fit football inside the world of coronavirus. Making decisions outside that lens is both dangerous and irresponsible."

While the NFL has attempted to place safety protocols in place to keep players as healthy and safe as possible but there have already been concerns about how realistic playing a season will prove to be. Tretter is making it clear that the players have serious doubts.
