Antonio Brown is working towards an NFL return and already generating interest from multiple teams. If the All-Pro receiver can make it back, the Seattle Seahawks could be waiting with a deal that benefits both sides.
As Antonio Brown targets a return to the football field, he will have to overcome a lot of questions and even greater concerns. In addition to a looming suspension that would sideline Brown for part of the 2020 NFL season, there are concerns about his history of off-field issues.
The Seattle Seahawks have been rumored to be among the most interested teams in Brown. Furthermore, he is believed to be a personal target for star quarterback Russell Wilson, who has made it clear he wants Seattle to sign the star receiver.
According to The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta, the Seahawks would likely only pursue Brown on a one-year deal. The contract would also likely include little guaranteed money, with most of the salary being earned through incentives and per-game roster bonuses.
Any other NFL team interested in Brown would certainly take the same approach, especially after what unfolded in 2019.
Shortly after being traded to the Oakland Raiders, things quickly unraveled for Brown. The club fined him heavily for conduct detrimental to the team, including a series of unprofessional behavior and a scuffle with teammates. Ultimately, when he still created problems, the Raiders released him.
Brown quickly signed with the New England Patriots, but his time with Tom Brady didn’t last long. After just one game, the Patriots released him following accusations of sexual misconduct by two separate women.
Following his second release, he went through a stretch of extreme behavioral issues. Brown blasted the NFL and hinted at retirement on Nov. 7 then clarified his statement the same day. He seemed to turn a corner after releasing an apology for his behavior a month later, before he went back to blasting the NFL just days later.
In addition to the sexual misconduct allegations, which the NFL is still investigating, Brown pleaded no contest in June to a felony burglary with battery charge stemming from an incident in January.
The start of training camp is just a few weeks away, which should incentivize teams to get Brown on their roster so he can prepare for the season. However, given the uncertainty over his suspension, he might have to wait even longer to land that one-year contract.
