Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick not guaranteed starting job?

The Washington Football Team did not, as once rumored, spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback earlier this spring after signing veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to a one-year deal, but it appears that doesn't mean Fitzpatrick is cemented as his new employer's QB1.

Per John Keim of ESPN, Washington coach Ron Rivera explained Thursday that he's holding an open competition for the starting job that includes Fitzpatrick battling with the likes of Taylor Heinicke, Kyle Allen, and Steven Montez.

"It's going to be a good competition," Rivera said. "I look forward to it. It's going to push our football team and make our football team better. I just feel that going into this knowing we have a proven guy there that has the ability to lead us, but again, we have a guy in Taylor that shows us he can do it. They are going to compete, they are going to push and I'm looking forward to it."

Rivera can make such comments now roughly two months before the start of preseason action, but Fitzpatrick is getting the majority of reps with starters in workouts and is atop the depth chart until further notice. Truth be told, this will only be a real competition if age catches up with Fitzpatrick and the 38-year-old is a shell of his former self during summer workouts and exhibition games.
