Analyst thinks a huge honor which one felt impossible is in Jared Goff's future

When the Detroit Lions acquired Jared Goff in 2021, he was at the lowest point in his career. It wasn't really a secret Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay didn't see him as the quarterback who could win a Super Bowl, and when acquiring Matthew Stafford was on the table Goff was gone.

Starting with the end of that 2021 campaign, Goff has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league. Entering Week 6 he's leading the league in completion rate (75.2 percent) and touchdown passes (12), and if MVP voting was done today he would (at least) get a ton of votes.

Approaching his 31st birthday (Oct. 14), Goff probably has a lot of time left n his career. With that in mind, his numbers are in line to rank well among his active peers and all-time when he calls it a career.

For quarterbacks, numbers only go so far to anoint greatness. Dan Marino's legacy is a bit diminished because he never won a Super Bowl, while Joe Montana with his four rings is a notch above him. John Elway's career was not complete until he won a Super Bowl, and he won back-to-back.

Goff went to a Super Bowl with the Rams. If he ever wins one with the Lions, he would be a God-level figure in Detroit and naturally bolster how his career is viewed.

Analyst puts big honor in Jared Goff's future

On Wednesday's edition of his Fox Sports Radio show "The Herd", Cowherd talked a lot about Goff.

"He's on his seventh offensive coordinator, and he's had one bad season with Jeff Fisher."

After lauding Goff's durability, size, accuracy, etc. , Cowherd went all-in.

"Folks, get used to hearing this. Jared Goff's gonna be a Hall of Famer", Cowherd said. "Absolutely gonna be a Hall of Famer. No question. No question, he's gonna be a Hall of Famer. He plays in rhythm, he plays in structure, he's got great genetics, his dad played in the bigs. Jared Goff is going to be a Hall of Famer."

"Jared Goff's a really good player. And here's another thing — have you ever noticed that with Jared Goff, his coordinators get head coaching jobs? He's like a stimulus package," Cowherd said. "Every coordinator he has, everyone's like, 'That's a good coordinator.' Yeah, because they've got Jared Goff."

"You think I'm crazy? Jared Goff's in his prime. This offensive line and this front office, they just drafted interior offensive linemen and they're not getting rid of Penei Sewell," Cowherd continued. "This offensive line's going nowhere, nowhere. The Rams, his former team, have offensive line issues. The Lions don't."

Cowherd of course got some criticism for his take about Goff being a Hall of Famer, and he responded on Thursday.

Pro Football Reference has a tool that attaches a number to players and compares them on a Hall of Fame scale. Goff's 47.95 mark is 57th among quarterbacks, with the average Hall of Fame signal caller having a 108 mark. The closest Hall of Fame quarterback to Goff is Jim Kelly, with a 59.10 mark. No other Hall of Fame quarterback is below 60.0 in PFR's metric.

During an appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show" a couple weeks ago, former NFL quarterback and current Amazon Prime "Thursday Night Football" analyst Ryan Fitpatrick was asked if a Super Bowl win would make Goff a Hall of Famer.

"I think so", Fitzpatrick said. "Because it's Detroit as well."

Fitzpatrick channeled the easy sentiment about how winning a Super Bowl in Detroit would mean a little more than it would in a lot of other places. That itself would help elevate Goff to Hall of Famer status.

Cowherd probably meant to add winning a Super Bowl to his assertion about Goff being a Hall of Famer, since he may not quite get there otherwise. But that there's even a conversation about him possibly being a Hall of Famer is a testament to how far Goff has come since the Lions acquired him.
