The Kansas City Chiefs fell 33-16 to the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Friday in NFL preseason action, with a blistering first-half from Mike Macdonald's team the catalyst for the win.
Sam Darnold and the Seahawks burst out of the gate with an 81-yard, 12-play touchdown drive to get things rolling as the defense was on its heels.
As an answer, Gardner Minshew, who got the start over Patrick Mahomes with No. 15 sitting, led the Chiefs on a 12-play, 65-yard drive as the offense had little trouble moving the ball down the field. But the offense was stopped just short on a fourth-down try at Seattle's 15-yard line.
The defense was reeling again on the next possession, this time with Drew Lock leading a 10-play, 85-yard touchdown drive to have the Chiefs down by two scores after two possessions.
Jalen Royals had a big return on special teams to set the Chiefs up at midfield on the following possession, and Minshew took full advantage, driving the offense down the field thanks to a big defensive pass interference call, before hitting tight end Robert Tonyan for a one-yard touchdown.
And that was as good as it got for the Chiefs in the first half, with the Seahawks scoring touchdowns on three of their four offensive drives, and on the one drive they failed to score, the Seattle offense got down to the Chiefs' two-yard line.
The Chiefs were blown away in the first half, with the Seahawks posting 309 yards of total offense (174 rushing yards), compared to Kansas City's 104, while the defense also allowed 8.6 yards per play to end the half down 23-7.
The rushing beatdown continued in the second half with the Chiefs unable to halt the brutal momentum from the Seahawks, as they surpassed 400 total yards of offense, but the main thing to come out of the game was the coaching staff getting another game to evaluate rookies and those on the roster bubble.
But the review won't make for pretty viewing.
