Andy Reid’s status remains untouched despite Chiefs’ struggles

Despite the Kansas City Chiefs finishing 6-11 in 2025 and missing the playoffs, Andy Reid’s status as the NFL’s best head coach remains untouched, as the Associated Press voted him No. 1 for the fourth consecutive year.

AP Pro Football Writer Rob Maaddi captured exactly why a single injury-plagued season did nothing to move the needle on Reid’s standing.

“Despite coming off his first losing season in Kansas City, Reid remains the standard for coaches,” Maaddi wrote for the Associated Press.

Reid occupies the 4th position in the all-time NFL winning coaches list with 307 wins, has 3 Super Bowl wins, and is the only NFL coach to have been the all-time winning coach with 2 different franchises, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

While in charge of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2012, Reid took the Eagles to the NFC Championship Game 5 times. In Kansas City, he delivered 12 straight winning seasons, 9 AFC West Titles in a row, and 5 Super Bowl games in 6 seasons.

Reid’s first-place votes totaled five, the most among all coaches.

Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams received three first-place votes, making him the second, while Mike MacDonald of the Seattle Seahawks, who won the Super Bowl in his second season, was the third.

The fifth spot was occupied by Sean Payton, who, after reshaping the Broncos into a 14-3 juggernaut, made it to the top five.

Chiefs offensive players with the most to prove at 2026 training camp

Being at the top means expectations in Kansas City immediately shift, and with training camp starting on July 29 in St. Joseph, several Chiefs offensive players are under real pressure to perform.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier could be a name to keep an eye on. Patrick Mahomes is still recovering from the injury to both his ACL and LCL, and Nussmeier is going to get a lot of action during the preseason.

Nussmeier was a seventh-round draft pick, so he also has a lot to prove. Running back Brashard Smith is also fighting for a spot.

For wide receiver Jalen Royals, this is year two with a record of only two catches and limited offensive opportunities in the 2025 season. He has to prove he has a spot on the team, with rookie Cyrus Allen trailing him.

Jaylon Moore has a significant standing at right tackle, though things are a bit murky behind him.

For instance, Esa Pole, now in his second season, and Kahlil Benson, an undrafted rookie, have been taking first-team reps at right tackle. Moore had better show up at camp ready to perform.
