Anthony Richardson will face more competition for his starting job in 2025.
On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts signed Daniel Jones to a one-year deal. The former first-round pick will presumably battle Richardson for the team's QB1 position this summer.
Richardson's agent, Deiric Jackson, confirmed to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero that Richardson is fu lly healthy after missing the last two games of the 2024 season due to back spasms. Jackson also said his client isn't seeking a trade.
"“AR will be ready to roll," Jackson told Pelissero.
Richardson completed 54.7 percent of his passes at Florida, but the Colts were enamored enough by his talent to take him with the No. 4 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. The unpolished prospect has endured some early growing pains.
A shoulder injury ended Richardson's rookie season after just four games. He returned to register a 61.6 quarterback rating in 2024.
Amid his struggles, the Colts briefly benched Richardson for Joe Flacco. Richardson returned to amass a career-high 272 passing yards in a Week 11 win over the New York Jets, but he didn't top 172 in four ensuing starts.
Richardson has a 50.6 completion rate, 2,391 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and a 67.8 passer rating in 15 career games. He's also rushed for 11 touchdowns and teased tantalizing upside on deep throws.
The Colts probably shouldn't have anticipated immediate success from someone who delivered erratic results in limited college reps. Richardson, 22, also entered the league sooner than most of his peers. He's younger than 2025 draft prospect Sheduer Sanders and three days older than Cam Ward.
While the Colts aren't necessarily waving the white flag on Richardson, they secured a contingency plan in Jones. If they're growing impatient with their former top pick, they could instead attempt to resuscitate a No. 6 selection who wore out his welcome with the New York Giants.
Jones received a massive payday after a 2022 breakout, but he's since averaged 5.9 yards per attempt with 10 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 16 starts. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 27-year-old will make $14 million this season.
