Anthony Richardson Still Has Top-10 Quarterback Potential

It is only one preseason game, so I will try not to overreact too much, but during the Indianapolis Colts' preseason opening game against the New England Patriots, Anthony Richardson flashed his potential once again.

By the time the first half was over, Richardson had looked once again like the high-upside player the Colts selected fourth overall in 2023. He also looked like a quarterback that could have top-10 potential once again. 

Anthony Richardson Still Has the Talent of a Top Quarterback

Now let me say this: a lot goes into a quarterback landing inside the top 10, and Richardson still has a long way to go for that. But the upside he flashed against New England's defense gave him the pathway to challenge for a fringe top-10 spot. Especially considering the talent currently in the NFL right now that is considered around that range, Richardson has a chance.

Against New England, he completed 11 of his 14 pass attempts for 145 yards, and even added 53 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. He did have an interception and a fumble, but his flashes were too great to ignore. 

The explosive running ability and arm strength to make a drive-changing play down the field are all still factors that provide Richardson with the hope he can become an impact starting quarterback at the NFL level. The biggest area for Richardson to show growth in was his ability to settle into an offense and operate it with command, and he did so against the Patriots.

The Right Situation is All Anthony Richardson Needs

For Richardson, the upside is still there, but it is clear his development has reached a ceiling in Indianapolis. He has the traits to push for the top 10, but it would have to be in a new situation where his development would be a focus.

Landing with an organization with a stable offense that has a strong running game and a creative offensive play caller could be exactly what Richardson needs to show that he has the traits of a player that could be difficult for opposing defenses to defend. The Patriots game showed the ceiling was still there; he just needs the right coach to unlock it. 

If his accuracy, durability, and turnover problems continue to improve, his combination of arm strength and open-field explosiveness gives him top-10 potential still.
