Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski declined to confirm on Monday that Joe Flacco would remain the club's starting quarterback.
This understandably caused outsiders to assume that Stefanski was planning to turn to rookie Dillon Gabriel for this coming Sunday's game against the 2-2 Minnesota Vikings that will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. It seems that people within the Browns may not be in agreement regarding the 1-3 team's quarterback situation.
For a piece published Tuesday, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand wrote that he believes that "there is disagreement in the building about" whether or not Flacco or Gabriel should get the nod versus the Vikings. Later in the morning, Tony Rizzo of ESPN Cleveland revealed that "insiders" say that "there's strife" within the Browns.
Rizzo added that Stefanski "wants to keep" Flacco the club's QB1 through at least Week 5. However, general manager Andrew Berry and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam allegedly want to see what Gabriel can do against a live defense in a meaningful game. For what it's worth, Rizzo also shared that his sources say Gabriel will start against Minnesota.
Flacco tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble on a strip sack in Cleveland's 34-10 blowout loss at the Detroit Lions this past Sunday. According to ESPN stats, the 40-year-old began Tuesday ranked last in the league among qualified quarterbacks with a 60.3 passer rating and 32nd out of 33 players with a 27.0 adjusted QBR on the season. Per StatMuse, no player committed more turnovers than Flacco (eight) over the campaign's first four weeks of action.
ESPN stats show that the Browns ended Week 4 ranked 31st in the NFL in scoring (14 points per game). Nevertheless, Grossi hinted that Cleveland could stick with Flacco through the Week 6 matchup at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 12.
"Some in the building may argue to keep Flacco on the job through the game in Pittsburgh, which is an intimidating venue for any rookie QB," Grossi wrote.
The Browns host the Miami Dolphins (1-3) on Oct. 19.
"I could see either decision being made," - @TonyGrossi on if the Browns will start Joe Flacco or Dillon Gabriel this week.

There continues to be no indication that rookie quarterback and fifth-round draft pick Shedeur Sanders is close to leapfrogging Gabriel on the Cleveland depth chart. As of late Tuesday morning, it was unclear if Sanders or Flacco would serve as Gabriel's primary backup if the Browns make a lineup change for the Minnesota contest. At that same time, ESPN BET had the Browns as 3.5-point underdogs against the Vikings.
