Atlanta Falcons Get a Terrible James Pearce Jr Update

The Atlanta Falcons will begin the 2026 season without one of their most productive young defensive players. Atlanta already lost pass rusher Jalon Walker to a torn ACL injury during training camp.

Falcons linebacker James Pearce has been suspended eight games by the NFL following an offseason domestic-violence arrest involving his former girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Pearce, 22, was arrested in February and initially faced multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, fleeing or eluding police with lights or siren, aggravated battery involving a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence.

One aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge was dropped in March, leaving Pearce facing four charges.

The arrest stemmed from an alleged incident involving Jackson. Authorities alleged Pearce stalked Jackson before pursuing her in a vehicle as she attempted to reach a police station. During the pursuit, Pearce allegedly caused a collision.

Pearce then reportedly fled from police in his vehicle, prompting a chase. After crashing the vehicle, he allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.

In April, reports indicated Pearce would enter a pretrial intervention program. Under the reported terms, the remaining charges could be dropped if Pearce successfully completes the program, which includes a requirement that he stay away from Jackson.

NFL Network reported at the time that successful completion of the program would result in no jail time and no admission of guilt.

The NFL had been closely monitoring the case throughout the offseason. Under the league’s personal conduct policy, the NFL can discipline players regardless of whether a criminal case results in a conviction.

Pearce missed time during Atlanta’s organized team activities following his arrest but returned to the team and was permitted to participate when the Falcons opened training camp.

His suspension will not prevent him from participating in preseason games. The eight-game ban officially begins in Week 1, leaving Atlanta without one of its top pass rushers for the first half of the regular season.

Pearce will be eligible to return in Week 9, when the Falcons are scheduled to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.

The suspension represents a significant early-season setback for Atlanta’s defense.

Selected by the Falcons with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, Pearce quickly emerged as one of the league’s most productive young edge defenders. He recorded 10.5 sacks while appearing in all 17 games during his rookie campaign and finished third in voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

His ability to pressure quarterbacks was expected to remain a major part of Atlanta’s defensive plans entering his second season.

Instead, the Falcons will have to adjust their pass-rush rotation for eight games before potentially getting Pearce back for the second half of the season.

For Pearce, the suspension adds another consequence to an offseason dominated by his legal situation. For Atlanta, it creates an immediate challenge: replacing double-digit-sack production from a player who appeared poised to become a cornerstone of the Falcons’ defense.
