Austin Ekeler Throws Subtle Shade At Chargers After Leaving
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers are undergoing a significant transformation this offseason, bidding farewell to several beloved players who will now don different jerseys as the 2024 season approaches. Among the departures is Austin Ekeler, a former fan favorite, who has inked a two-year deal with the Washington Commanders, reuniting with coach Anthony Lynn.

Ekeler’s departure was anticipated, especially after a disappointing season, marked by unsuccessful contract negotiations and trade talks. The Chargers seemed disinterested in retaining Ekeler, evident from their swift acquisition of Gus Edwards as their first offseason move.

Looking to revive his form and dispel notions of age-related decline, Ekeler aims to rejuvenate his career in Washington.

Despite a lackluster 2023 season, Ekeler attributes his struggles to an early ankle injury and the Chargers’ failure to adapt their offensive strategy to his strengths, rather than a decline in his abilities.

The Chargers’ offensive woes last season also cast a shadow over Ekeler’s performance. Despite the hiring of Kellen Moore with the promise of revitalizing the rushing game, the team failed to deliver consistently.

Moore, though showcasing some positive aspects, faltered notably after key losses like Corey Linsley and Mike Williams in Week 3, leading to subpar offensive output.

While external factors may have contributed to Ekeler’s decline, there’s no denying that he showed signs of slowing down last season. While a change of scenery may offer a fresh start, it’s unlikely Austin Ekeler will return to his peak form of seasons past.
