Bad weather could put the Chiefs at a disadvantage against opportunistic Jaguars defense in Week 5

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 at EverBank Stadium on "Monday Night Football," and the game could be impacted by something entirely out of the team's control.

As of Thursday morning, the Coastal Duval County is under four different weather advisory warnings, with the majority of them not set to expire until Sunday evening. That includes warnings for High Surf Advisory, High Rip Current Risk, Coastal Flood Advisory, and Coastal Flood Watch. As for the Week 5 game on Monday night, weather forecasters in the area expect typical afternoon showers and thunderstorms to dissipate by the time kickoff arrives. However, the game could be impacted by rain showers from a stray thunderstorm or two.

Remember that the NFL's rules state that a game must be put into a weather delay if lightning strikes within 10 miles of the stadium. Delays will be the least of the Chiefs' worries when it comes to potential rain impacts against the Jags in Week 5.

Weather could play a factor in the Chiefs' turnover awareness vs. Jaguars

If rain comes into play in Week 5, the Chiefs will have to be even more vigilant when it comes to holding onto the football. Winning the turnover battle is a massive part of any given NFL game, and the Jaguars are the league's most opportunistic defense when it comes to takeaways through the first four weeks of the 2025 NFL season. They currently lead the NFL with 13 forced turnovers.

"They catch the ball well, first of all, and they work there," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said. "They're disciplined in their lanes, on their zone drops, opportunistic on tipped balls, and then they've stripped out a couple of balls. They go after it. You've got to make sure that you're aware of that as you play them, for sure."

Fortunately for the Chiefs, they've been relatively clean when it comes to hanging onto the football this year. They're one of only three NFL clubs to have surrendered a single turnover through the first four weeks of the 2025 season.

"You know, emphasize it, I guess," Reid said. "But the guys, it really comes down to the guys doing it, and the guys have done a nice job keeping it high and tight when needed, and not having tipped balls, you know, all the things that kind of lead to those. And then, you know, this is a potential weather game, so you add that into it too. You've got to make sure that you really take care of the football."

Whether it's slick and rainy or not, the Chiefs will remain vigilant on the turnover situation in Week 5. Kansas City will gladly take 78-degree weather over 100-plus degrees and the humidity that they dealt with in the September game in Jacksonville a few years ago. The weather could also impact the kicking game, as Harrison Butker and Matt Araiza will have to account for 12-mile-per-hour wind gusts.
