Bears’ Ben Johnson confirms left tackle rotation plan

The Chicago Bears entered their Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings with a clear plan at left tackle. And by the third drive, it seemed as if those plans had gone out the window.

After being called for holding, Braxton Jones soon saw himself benched in favor of Theo Benedet. Jones eventually did re-enter the starting lineup. Head coach Ben Johnson made it clear both Jones and Benedet playing was a part of Chicago’s strategy, via his postgame press conference.

“Yeah, yeah that was the plan,” Johnson said.

When the snap counts come out, it’ll be more clear how reps were distributed between Jones and Benedet. Overall, the Bears allowed four sacks on the day, so both players will be facing a bit of scrutiny.

Left tackle has been a revolving door in Chicago since Johnson’s arrival. The franchise soon hopes to find their long-term answer at the position.

Chicago Bears’ Ozzy Trapilo inching closer to return

The Bears decided to rule out left tackle Ozzy Trapilo for Week 2. However, he returned to a full practice on Friday. It seems as if he’ll soon be ready to return to full NFL action.

When he does, it seems likely Trapilo will challenge for the starting left tackle job. He had settled into the position prior to his injury in the Divisional Round. Clearly, Johnson trust him in his offense. And if the Bears are forced to rotate left tackles, they may prefer to see what Trapilo can offer long-term.

The tackle is still coming off of a serious patellar tendon injury. Chicago is being cautious with his return, as the fact he is already on the field is miraculous enough. If he can handle a few more full practices, the Bears would feel more confident putting him on the field.

Before his injury, Trapilo showed flashes towards being the answer at left tackle. Once fully past his injury, he will get the opportunity to prove his worth again.
