The Chicago Bears expect a lot from Dillon Thieneman in his first NFL season. During training camp, Coby Bryant injured his knee and needs four to six months to recover. The setback paved the way for the rookie to receive more playing time. He made his preseason debut during Saturday’s 30-14 win over the Cleveland and garnered attention his performance.
Chicago selected Thieneman at No. 25 overall. He is coming off a strong season with the Oregon Ducks, earning first-team All-American honors. The 22-year-old recorded 96 combined tackles, including 44 solo efforts. He will likely be the Bears’ starter for majority of the season, with Xavier Woods providing depth at the position.
The team does not expect Bryant to return until Week 13 or 14 at the earliest.
Dillon Thieneman’s played limited minutes in his first preseason. He only recorded one solo tackle but impressed Chicago fans with his speed and football IQ.

Coaches will rely heavily on Thieneman for his coverage and route reading. The Bears added him and Bryant to plug their hole at safety following the departure of Kevin Byard III and Jonathan Owens in free agency. However, with the one-time Super Bowl champion injured, the team will closely monitor the rookie’s minutes this offseason.
The team can’t afford to see him get hurt because it lacks depth at safety. Woods will likely receive opportunities and will mentor Thieneman throughout the 2026 season.
