Bears: Kyle Monangai Injures Knee
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

This off-season has been quite the rollercoaster thus far. With every piece of good news, an unpleasant one seems to follow. Luther Burden’s great news of avoiding serious injury was followed by the gut punch of Coby Bryant’s new return timeline.

Today, August 16th, followed a similar playbook. Before Sunday’s training camp practice, it was announced that Ozzy Trapilo would be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list . The good vibes were high. That would not last long, as news of Kyle Monangai’s injury made its rounds.

Sunday was slated to be an unpadded practice for the starting unit, as they, for the most part, did not participate in the first week of preseason action versus the Cleveland Browns. One would think that setting would limit physicality and tackling. Well, one would be wrong. Grady Jarrett followed through on a tackle that resulted in injury to Monangai’s right knee. This very well could have been catastrophic news, but as of now, it seems a serious injury was dodged.

The injuries have certainly piled up during this training camp. That being said, do not expect Head Coach Ben Johnson to let off the gas. Coach Johnson has shown that this is the time of year to set the tone. The time to callous the body for the season ahead. A stark change in the culture established by the previous regime. That culture shift he brought resulted in a tough, gritty team that won the division a season ago.

Will this be another year of continued success, or will these mounting injuries be too much to overcome? With the season just a few weeks away, only time will tell.
