Bears’ Offense Is Primed For A Big Week 3

The Chicago Bears were lauded as offseason champions, although through two weeks, they do not look the part. Starting 0-2, fans are desperate for a win as the Bears host the Dallas Cowboys in Week Three.

Week Three games usually don’t hold the pressure this one does. Can the new era Bears, led by rookie head coach Ben Johnson, find their footing, or will there be more disappointment?

I think they will not only win this game, but do so in emphatic fashion.

The Offense Is Showing Signs Of Improvement

Even through two losses, the “Ben Johnson Offense” has shown flashes in Chicago. They’ve scored touchdowns in the first quarter in both games, a feat they didn’t achieve until week four last year. Johnson has been able to scheme up plays to generate easy success. His run scheme has also generated elite offensive line metrics.

The Chicago offensive line ranks first in ESPN’s Run Block Win Rate stat at 78%. Despite this, the Bears rank 28th in EPA (expected points added) per rush, with a value of -0.15. I expect this number to rise as running back D’Andre Swift gels with this offensive line. If he can’t figure it out, I anticipate Johnson replacing him with another back, as running the ball efficiently is very important within his scheme.

Despite the poor run game, the Bears’ budding second-year duo of quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Rome Odunze has shown lots of growth. While Williams has had good mixed with bad, Odunze has been elite. He has 13 catches for 165 yards and all three of Chicago’s receiving touchdowns. Odunze has reflected his high draft capital so far this season.

Williams, on the other hand, has been subject to lots of scrutiny. In my opinion, this is largely unwarranted. He is playing within a new, complex system. Why should he be expected to be a master of it so quickly? He shouldn’t. He is showing massive improvements, though, both from last year to this year and from week one to week two. Beyond this, Williams has showcased his elite athleticism that made him the number one overall pick in 2024, with Houdini-esque escapes from pressure and off-platform dimes.

More time under Johnson will only help this offense. They have seven pre-snap penalties through two weeks; this is an unacceptable number. As the offense gets more used to the exotic motions and snap counts, this number should decline. This will help the offense stay on schedule. An improvement on the run game will do the same. Both of these factors will remove a big load off Williams and allow him to settle into the new offense. If this offense gets rolling, the talent is present for an elite unit.

The Cowboys’ Defense Has Been Picked Apart

The Cowboys lost their star edge rusher, Micah Parsons, to trade before the season started. The impacts have shown so far this season. They just allowed 2025 Russell Wilson and the Giants to throw for 450 yards and three touchdowns. This defense also ranks second-to-last in EPA/per play allowed with 0.17.

This defense is also led by the former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus. His tenure in Chicago ended rather distastefully, as a mid-season fire. This makes for elite bulletin board material to pump up this Bears’ roster. I expect them to play hard to prove themselves against their former scapegoated coach.

End Of My Chicago Bears Rant

In a desperate spot, Chicago is presented with a golden opportunity. If you believe in the talent of both the playcaller, Johnson, and the roster, featuring Williams, Odunze, and DJ Moore, you should believe in an explosive week three.

I believe in the talent, and I don’t believe in the Cowboys to stop them.

If you have any Bears in fantasy, do not be hesitant in putting them in your starting lineups. You will not be let down. If you are, you can blame me!
