When the Chicago Bears take the field in 2025, all eyes will be on quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense. However, for the Bears to truly take a step forward as a franchise, the defense must be highly improved as well.
During the 2024 campaign, Chicago ranked 27th overall in total defense, allowing 354.3 yards per game. Still, their work in the pass game was one of the Bears' lone strengths, as they ranked 16th overall, allowing 217.9 YPG. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who was voted to the Pro Bowl, played a major role in that success.
When training camp opened though, it was revealed that Johnson was dealing with a long-term injury. He missed all of the preseason, with questions looming on whether he would be ready for Week 1. The Bears still haven't confirmed if he will suit up, but Johnson is one step closer, as he officially made his return to practice on Wednesday, via Adam Jahns of CHGO.
"Cornerback Jaylon Johnson (groin) and rookie running back Kyle Monangai both returned to practice for the Bears," Jahns wrote.

Johnson will still need to get through a week of practice healthy before he is cleared to play. But if the Bears have him available for their Week 1 clash against the Minnesota Vikings, it'd make a world of difference.
The cornerback was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2023, after setting new career-highs in passes defended (10) and interceptions (four). His numbers fell a little bit in 2024, as Johnson had eight passes defended and two picks. However, he set a new career-best with 53 tackles, and his 76.2 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked 20th/222 cornerbacks.
After hiring Ben Johnson as their head coach, the Bears named Dennis Allen their new defensive coordinator. He is expected to run an aggressive, attacking style of defense that should allow Johnson to shine once more. If he is covering team's opposing team's top receivers, it'll be the perfect opportunity for him to prove he deserves to be considered amongst the NFL's bests.
But before Johnson can return to the Pro Bowl, he first just needs to get on the field. He was able to do so Wednesday, taking his first step past his groin injury. Still, the Bears haven't confirmed whether the cornerback will play in Week 1 or not, although they remain optimistic.
