After an extended bye week, the Chicago Bears have put the self-scouting in the rearview mirror and are turning the page toward preparing for the Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders.
Despite all the hype and past history from last year's matchup, Bears head coach Ben Johnson downplayed the importance of this game on Monday night, although the returning players from last season likely feel a different way.
For Johnson, he's mainly focused on the Bears. Cleaning up lingering mistakes and not worrying about all the outside noise going into this game. And looking back at the tape from the first four games, there's one concern Johnson is primarily focused on emphasizing this week.
"We're shooting ourselves in the foot quite a bit," Johnson told reporters on Tuesday when asked about the offense through four games. "When I look at where we were through the first four weeks, a lot of penalties. I want to say we were Top-5 on offense (in penalties) through four weeks.
"And so, we're playing behind the sticks and you can certainly feel that as I was calling it. I give the guys a lot of credit, I did feel like we were pretty good at getting back on track as much as we could. But, it's just not sustainable when you're playing football that way. That's going to be an emphasis here for us going forward. We've got to get the pre-snap penalties under control."
Unfortunately for Johnson, Week 6 specifically could be a tough opportunity to do so even with an enhanced focus on the problem, and it has nothing to do with the Commanders.
Courtesy of Brad Biggs with The Chicago Tribune, referee Alex Moore and his crew will be working the Bears-Commanders game on Monday Night Football in Week 6. Why is that important?
Moore and his crew lead the NFL in penalties called through the first five weeks of the season with 95 penalties enforced and 22 dismissed. Biggs added that's 13 more penalties enforced and 17 more penalty flags thrown compared to the next highest officiating crew. So, when it comes to cleaning up the penalties this week, the Bears will be fighting a three-front battle.

For those curious, here's what the breakdown looks like for the penalty total according to Pro Football Focus.
That's literally every offensive role player in Chicago with the one exception of left guard Joe Thuney. Seeing it laid out like that, it's easy to see why that is Johnson's biggest concern with the offense because it's not just one person.
And on Monday, these officials won't be allowing any leeway when it comes to throwing that yellow flag up in the air. Chicago's offense will need to be locked in and playing clean to avoid any costly mistakes from shooting the unit in the foot once again.
