Chicago Bears second-round rookie offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo had quite the rollercoaster experience going into his first NFL season.
Upon arriving to Chicago, Trapilo was inserted into the left tackle battle with second-year tackle Kiran Amegadjie, a battle that turned into a three-man race once incumbent starter Braxton Jones was cleared to practice in training camp following a fractured fibula suffered late last season.
However, the rookie hit what general manager Ryan Poles described as a "rookie wall" and was moved back to his natural position at right tackle. While many expected Trapilo to be the swing tackle in Week 1, that role instead went to second-year Theo Benedet leaving Trapilo as a healthy inactive for the first three games of the season.
In Week 4, the Bears ruled out starting right tackle Darnell Wright going into the weekend, opening the door for Trapilo to finally get on the game day roster. During the second quarter, the coaching staff pulled Jones from left tackle and moved Benedet from right to left tackle, thus throwing Trapilo into the fire at right tackle against Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby.

The rookie received some high praise for the way he responded to the entire situation and of course for the way he played after getting thrown into the game. As for what happens next, the Bears have plenty of options to consider.
"We've got some really good tackles. That was the beauty of the vision that Ryan (Poles) had was bringing in a lot of really talented players and letting them battle out and see who wins what," Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. "Whether that's a starting role or whether that's a backup role. We'll determine that when that time comes."

In the meantime, Wright was still not practicing due to an elbow injury when the team was out on the field on Tuesday following the extended bye week. Granted, there's still plenty of time for Wright to ramp back up before Monday's game, it's looking likely that Benedet and Trapilo could be the starters against the Commanders. Saying that's the case, Johnson was then asked whether or not Trapilo's play could lead to a permanent change to the starting lineup.
"Absolutely," Johnson added. "He's a really good player. I think he's really settled in on that right side. I'm really looking forward to all those tackles getting healthy and getting after it again."
The difficult part in this whole equation is that Wright was playing at a high level prior to his injury, outside of committing consistent penalties. But, competition brings out the best in everyone and Johnson is making it known that the best two tackles each week will be the ones starting.
