On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the NFL announced Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter will not be suspended for this weekend's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Instead, Carter will receive a $57,222 fine - equal to one game check - for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
The NFL revealed Carter's suspension is "considered to have been served in Week 1" because his ejection from the game came before his first defensive snap.
"The NFL Players Association has informed the NFL that Carter will not contest the discipline and has waived his right to appeal. He is eligible to participate in the club’s Week 2 game against the Kansas City Chiefs," the NFL said in a statement. "League rules prohibiting unsportsmanlike conduct are of vital importance to everyone involved in the game. The NFL has been clear with players, clubs, and the NFLPA that it plans to place particular emphasis on sportsmanship this season."
Following the punishment from the league, the Eagles could have further punished their star defensive tackle by voiding guarantees in his contract or seeking a signing bonus payment forfeiture, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.
However, the Eagles and Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, worked on an agreement that the team won't take such harsh measures against the former first-round pick.
Carter previously apologized for his behavior.
“It was a mistake that happened on my side, and it just won’t happen again,” he said after the game. “I feel bad for my teammates and the fans out there. … It won’t happen again. I can make that promise.”
Carter is eligible to play in a Super Bowl rematch between the Chiefs and Eagles.
