Boomer Esiason shares when Aaron Rodgers started considering joining Jets

Former New York Jets quarterback and current "The NFL Today" analyst Boomer Esiason addressed when Aaron Rodgers began considering making a move from the Green Bay Packers to Gang Green.

"When they saw the Jets during the regular season, he saw a young and growing team, and he saw a lot of really good players," Esiason said during Thursday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "He wanted to be a part of it."

Esiason, who was all over the Rodgers-to-the-Jets story throughout the offseason, was referencing how the AFC East side defeated Rodgers and the Packers 27-10 at Lambeau Field last October. Both New York and Green Bay ultimately missed the playoffs, but many believe the Jets were a decent quarterback away from qualifying for the postseason.

Earlier this month, Esiason explained why he believed Rodgers gave the Jets "a three-year commitment" before his trade from the Packers was finalized in April. It was learned Wednesday the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player accepted a massive pay cut to start for the Jets over at least the next two seasons, and Esiason understandably enjoyed some victory laps after that news broke.

"He saw a really good, young football team," Esiason continued. "He saw up close and personal what that defense was. He said, 'I want to come and play in New York. I’m all in.' He wants to win a Super Bowl."

Even before Rodgers accepted less money than what he was owed via the contract extension he signed in March 2022, he suggested on multiple occasions that joining the Jets was not "a one-year deal." Of course, the 39-year-old could change his mind if he earns the second championship ring of his career this coming February.

As of Thursday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Jets seventh among all betting favorites at +2000 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII.
