Braelon Allen injury update: New York Jets RB leaves Monday Night Football after appearing to hurt his knee

New York Jets RB Braelon Allen was injured while returning a kickoff during the second quarter during Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. He will not return to the game.

Allen was hit in the knee during the play. He stayed down on the ground for an extended period and after being checked out by medical staff on the field, he headed off into the medical tent.

It continued a string of bad luck for the Jets tailback. Allen had previously fumbled the football near the goal line on the Jets previous possession, costing New York a touchdown. Instead of taking the lead, the Jets coughed up the football and Miami took advantage, extending its lead to 10-0 to start the second quarter.

“As Braelon Allen ran off the field after the fumble, Aaron Glenn grabbed both sides of his helmet to console him and give him words of encouragement,” sideline reporter Katie George said during the ESPN broadcast. “Allen then spent a lot of time pacing, sitting and standing alone.

“He was obviously gutted to lose the ball at the goal line. Now, he’s in some physical pain, as they look at his left knee in the injury tent.”

Allen is the Jets second-team running back, sitting behind Breece Hall. Coming into the matchup, Allen had totaled 14 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown.

The Jets RB is in his second season in the NFL out of Wisconsin. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, No. 134 overall. Allen appeared in all 17 games for New York during his rookie season, logging 92 carries for 334 yards and two touchdowns. He has yet to fumble so far during his NFL career.

He spent three seasons with the Badgers before moving on to the pro’s. Allen had a spectacular career with the Badgers — falling 16 yards short for three-straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons. In total, Allen recorded 597 rushing attempts for 3,494 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Instead, it will be Breece Hall that continues to take the majority of snaps in the backfield for New York. He finished the first half with seven carries for 53 yards, while Allen’s night ended with four carries totaling 26 yards on the night.

Miami entered halftime leading the Jets 10-3 after Nick Folk nailed a 58-yard field goal as time expired on the second quarter. Both teams are looking for their first win of the season.
