Brett Favre vs. Mark Gastineau In Video Going Viral

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre hasn’t done himself many favors off the field in his post-Green Bay Packers career.

He’s landed himself in different bouts of trouble, but recently, a moment from his glory days caught up to him.

Ahead of Friday’s drop off ESPN’s upcoming 30 for 30, “The New York Sack Exchange,” the network unveiled an altercation between Favre and New York Jets legend Mark Gastineau.

Gastineau approached Favre at an autograph signing with a score to settle dating back to 2001.

That’s the year New York Giants edge rusher Michael Strahan set the single-season sack record with 22.5. His final sack, in Green Bay, came thanks to a generous Favre surrender.

He took a dive and, in one motion, took the record away from Gastineau, who held it since 1984.

When Favre said he thought they had met before, Gastineau gave the quarterback a piece of his mind.

“Yeah, right, when you fell down for him,” Gastineau said. “I’m going to get my sack back. I’m going to get my sack back, dude.”

“You probably would hurt me,” Favre said.

Gastineau made the moment awkward, but got his point across.

“Well I don’t care,” Gastineau said. “You hurt me. You hurt me! You hear me?

“Yeah, I hear you,” Favre responded.

“You really hurt me,” Gastineau added. “You really hurt me. “You hurt me, Brett.”

The quarterback was ushered away by someone hoping to direct him back to the signing at hand.

Clearly, Gastineau felt the sack was of little football integrity. With the record defining his legacy as a player, it’s reasonable for one to hold a grudge.

Perhaps for purists – or simply Jets fans – Gastineau’s record still stands. Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt eventually tied Strahan’s mark in 2021 in 15 games played, although the new 18-game season gave him more breathing room.

Fans can watch more of Gastineau and the rest of the New York Sack Exchange when the documentary drops on Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN and ESPN+.
