Broncos' Evan Engram Reveals Why He Signed With Denver

The Denver Broncos made one of the most notable free agent signings of the current offseason on March 13, the day veteran tight end Evan Engram inked a two-year, $23 million contract with the team.

Engram's addition to the Broncos' passing game was a welcome one as the franchise looked to build on a successful 2024 campaign that saw it reach the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade. He will be joining a tight end room that features the likes of Adam Trautman, Nate Adkins, and Lucas Krull, among others.

But the opportunity to be the marquee name in that position group was not the reason Engram decided to move to Denver, which he revealed to reporters on Thursday.

"Honestly, everything about it," Engram said when asked about the motivation behind his move to the Mile High City.

Engram's spell in free agency did not last very long, as he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars just a week before signing with the Broncos. He said Denver was active in securing his signature from the very beginning.

"They were the first team to call when I got cut," Engram said. "Just talking to them, getting to know them, getting here, getting in the building, feeling the energy here, meeting with some of the guys, hanging out with coaches, hanging out with the front office. Just the expectations that are here, the team that's here, the quarterback that's here, the coach that's here... I could go on for days."

Another team active in Engram's recruitment was the Los Angeles Chargers, one of the Broncos' divisional rivals. The Chargers went on to sign former New York Jets tight end Tyler Conklin after missing out on Engram.

Even when Engram was in Los Angeles, the Broncos remained on his mind, he said.

"Free agency is a crazy roller coaster. [I] took a visit to LA. Great organization there, as well. I had a great visit with them," Engram said. "But the best place for me and my family was here in Denver."

The Broncos will be the third team Engram has played for in his professional career after previously spending time with the Jaguars (2022-2024) and the New York Giants (2017-2021). Since the Giants took Engram with their first-round pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, he has gone on to make two Pro Bowl rosters and log 496 catches, 4,922 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns.

As he looks forward to next season, Engram expressed excitement about a fresh start in Colorado.

"[I'm] blessed to be here," Engram said. "Everything happens for a reason, and I'm really glad to be in Denver."
