Shortly after the 2025 season ended, JL Skinner revealed he played through a torn labrum. The fourth-year Broncos safety and special teams ace underwent surgery, and he has managed to recover in full during the spring.
Skinner recently revealed on social media (h/t Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post) he has received full medical clearance. He will be able to participate in training camp from the onset as a result. The 2026 season will be critical in Skinner’s case, since it represents the final year of his rookie contract.
The former sixth-round pick was limited to just two games during the 2023 campaign. Since then, however, Skinner has managed to make 33 combined regular and postseason appearances. His playing time has come almost exclusively on special teams, during that stretch with the Boise State product logging 634 third phase snaps compared to 53 on defense. That can be expected to continue in 2026.
Skinner still finds himself behind Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones on Denver’s safety depth chart. Provided they remain healthy, a starting role will not become available. Still, Skinner could deliver another strong showing on special teams as part of the Broncos’ efforts to make another deep playoff run. Doing so would help the 25-year-old’s market value next spring.
Denver has nearly $30MM in cap space not long before training camp. The team could easily afford depth in the secondary and/or competition for playing time on special teams as a result. With Skinner available for full training camp participation, though, the Broncos should feel comfortable with where things stand on that front.
