The Denver Broncos came into the offseason with a clear goal. Get head coach Sean Payton more offensive weapons to work with.
His "joker" mandate was met with former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram and UCF running back RJ Harvey, two players with multidimensional skill sets that complement the Broncos' offense.
Even after those additions, the Broncos still needed some more juice at the wide receiver position, as no wideout other than Courtland Sutton eclipsed more than 600 yards receiving in 2024.
That's why Denver used their third-round pick on Illinois receiver Pat Bryant, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound big-play threat.
A player of this physical build reminds Payton a lot of a former star he had success with when he was coaching the New Orleans Saints, Michael Thomas.
"We always talk about, who does he remind (you of)?" Payton said via Jeff Legwold of ESPN. "We try to find comps. There were so many things about his game that reminded me of Mike Thomas. With respect to Mike, who became ... I mean, holy cow."
Bryant was a stud at Illinois, racking up 984 yards on 54 catches his senior season. He also tied the school record with 10 touchdown receptions.
"His size and his hands are outstanding. He competes," Payton continued. "He was just a player that excelled in crunch time. I think he had a walk-off, a couple of these big plays."
The Broncos should be excited about the prospect of Bryant coming in and developing chemistry with second-year quarterback Bo Nix, who showcased his ability to air the ball out downfield during his rookie season.
