The Cleveland Browns wrapped up two days of joint practices with the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday afternoon. Now, the focus shifts to Saturday’s preseason game.
It’s still unclear how the Browns will approach the game in terms of playing their starters. Against the Carolina Panthers last week, Cleveland rested most of its starters, with the exception of rookies like DT Mason Graham and LB Carson Schwesinger.
Under Kevin Stefanski, the Browns have typically used joint practices to get the bulk of starter reps in a more controlled environment rather than in an exhibition game. Coming out of these two practices, there are several key takeaways.
Garrett, the best pass rusher in the game, gave the Eagles fits over two days. The former Defensive Player of the Year notched multiple sacks in practice and looks poised for another dominant season. He’s had at least 14 sacks in each of the last four years, and if this week was any indication, that streak will continue.
Myles Garrett is sacking Jalen Hurts on almost every play. He just pulls up and lets the Eagles finish the rep. It’s almost comical.

When Martin Emerson Jr. went down, the Browns took a big hit in the secondary. Ward looked every bit like a lockdown CB1 against the Eagles, including a tough pass breakup against DeVonta Smith. Greg Newsome II will move back outside from the slot, but beyond that, the Eagles found plenty of success targeting Cleveland’s other cornerbacks—and opposing teams will likely follow that blueprint. When roster cuts happen, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Browns add another cornerback, possibly even signing a veteran free agent.

One of the biggest standouts from the joint practices was rookie Harold Fannin Jr. Cleveland barely used him in last week’s preseason game, which may be a sign they plan to rely on him during the regular season. On Thursday, Fannin caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Dillon Gabriel. The Bowling Green product has been a tough cover all training camp, and that continued against Philadelphia.
Cleveland’s formula this season will be toughness, physicality, and a return to the defensive dominance they enjoyed in 2023. Garrett will be central to that, but the defensive line as a whole is going to be critical. Mason Graham had a strong showing against the Eagles, and the unit collectively made its presence felt.
Another dominant day for the @Browns DL in Philly. That unit is gonna carry this squad…they will be game wreckers. @Flash_Garrett has been unblockable and it’s often been a meeting at the QB. Flacco got the pass game going in last team

Period capped by TD to Thrash
The Browns have plenty of competition at wide receiver behind Jerry Jeudy and likely Cedric Tillman as the No. 2 option. Jamari Thrash is making a push for the WR3 job after a solid week against the Eagles. Meanwhile, Johnson had a drop in the first preseason game and another on Thursday in joint practice. With the Browns unlikely to get elite quarterback play, receivers will need to step up.
I had five touchdowns for the Browns’ No. 1 offense today after they had zero yesterday.

Gabriel’s one completion was the TD to Fannin. The drop on the next one was the only time I saw Diontae Johnson in.
