Browns Evaluate Shedeur Sanders for Backup Quarterback Spot

The Cleveland Browns are evaluating their quarterback depth following the trade of veteran Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals, a move that cleared room for their younger signal-callers to step up. With rookie Dillon Gabriel set to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that he has yet to decide whether Shedeur Sanders or practice squad quarterback Bailey Zappe will serve as the backup on Sunday.

Stefanski told reporters he would “let the week play out [and] make a decision later” as both Sanders and Zappe continue competing for the QB2 role.

Sanders’ Growth and Positive Outlook

For Sanders, who began training camp as the Browns’ No. 4 quarterback, the opportunity to potentially rise to the backup role represents a significant step forward. The fifth-round rookie expressed optimism on Thursday, noting his improved mindset and preparation.

“I’m in a great mental space overall,” Sanders said. “You tend to get a little bit more excited when you see a light at the end of the tunnel, for sure. Whatever my role is here, I’m thankful. I’m happy just to do that.”

Sanders, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, spent much of the early season serving as the team’s inactive emergency quarterback. He split scout-team reps with Gabriel and Zappe during practice while adjusting to the NFL’s speed and playbook.

Coaches Praise Sanders’ Development

Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees praised Sanders’ growth and preparation, emphasizing that the rookie has adapted well to the team’s offensive system.

We’re looking for constant improvement throughout the season, and he’s done that,” Rees said. “You see the growth and familiarity of the offense and what we’re asking of those guys. He’s gotten more used to the weekly preparation and has done a nice job when given opportunities to operate.”

Responding to Criticism and Staying Focused

Sanders faced criticism last week after pantomiming answers during a media session, a moment widely discussed following comments from ESPN analyst Rex Ryan. Sanders explained that he aims to maintain positivity and be more aware of how his personality is perceived.

“I guess not everybody likes playful all the time,” he said. “It’s about understanding how to be at all times and keeping my personality a little bit slimmer, I guess.”

Deion Sanders’ Support and Perspective

Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders, recently told CBS Colorado that his son remains in good spirits as he waits for his opportunity.

Shedeur’s doing good — mentally, emotionally, psychologically,” the elder Sanders said. “He’s smiling. They can’t knock the smile off his face. I can’t wait until he gets his opportunity and does his thing.”

Looking Ahead

With Flacco gone and the Browns’ quarterback room now composed entirely of rookies, Sanders’ moment could come sooner than expected. As Cleveland prepares for Sunday’s divisional matchup in Pittsburgh, Stefanski’s upcoming decision on the backup role could mark a pivotal step in Sanders’ early NFL journey.
