Browns make final training camp decision on Shedeur Sanders

Shedeur Sanders’ first weeks in Cleveland have been humbling for the ‘Grown’.

After taking a tumble in the 2025 NFL Draft, things couldn’t get any worse for the former Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner. Sanders, who many considered to have great promise with his playmaking ability, received a lot of scrutiny for his play on the field and the way he interviewed with NFL teams.

The Browns drafted Sanders with the 144th pick, which was fifty picks after they took Oregon QB Dilion Gabriel. If Cleveland wanted to know if Shedeur was going to step up to the challenge and compete for an opportunity to play, they got their answer. He has been given ammunition to draw his line in the sand and go after the ultimate prize of becoming the starting quarterback.

The Browns quarterback battle will be interesting to watch. Sanders had six different offensive coordinators and Dillion has played in three different programs during their respective collegiate careers. While they both ended up as Heisman finalists, the paths were not the same.

Sanders is set to arrive at camp on May 9th and will continue to prepare himself for when it’s time to prove he’s ready. In the meantime, the Browns dropped their rookie jersey numbers on Tuesday and Shedeur will be without No. 2 for the first time in his career. Fans have become so accustomed to seeing him wear his father’s college number that will be worn by Browns wide receiver DeAndre Carter.

However, Sanders has decided to wear the number 12, like his mentor Tom Brady. The decision to change numbers for Sanders shouldn’t be an issue, because it still represents the Sanders number the reverse of Deion’s number.

At the end of the day, the number doesn’t make the player, but the other way around. The reset will be good for Sanders as he will look to make an impact on the field with the number 12 like Brady did for the New England Patriots and later the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
