Browns reporter says what all Eagles fans already knew about Kenny Pickett

Philadelphia Eagles fans knew they would be losing a solid backup quarterback when Kenny Pickett got traded to the Cleveland Browns, but he finds himself in the thick of the starting job.

Last year, Pickett filled in for Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts when he got injured in the second matchup against the Washington Commanders. While they lost that game, he would win his first and only start the following week against the Dallas Cowboys.

Pickett finished the season with 291 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. He did appear in the Super Bowl and kneeled the ball down to seal the 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Pickett threw one pass in the postseason for Philadelphia.

Now entering the battle for starting quarterback for Cleveland, Pickett is playing exactly how Eagles fans expected him to.

What Browns beat reporter is saying about Pickett that Eagles fans already know

Cleveland Browns On SI and Locked on Browns team reporter Spencer German shared his insights on how minicamp was going for former Eagles quarterback Pickett. German complimented him on how he performed at minicamp on Thursday as he shared a video of Pickett connecting with tight end Tre' McKitty for a touchdown.

"Thought Kenny Pickett ended the week with his best day. Here he was with the second team, after Flacco went with the ones, tossing a nice TD pass to TE Tre' McKitty"

In his most recent article, sharing his observations from minicamp, German discusses the quarterback job as being between Pickett and Joe Flacco. Despite an up-and-down performance from Pickett during minicamp, he appears to still be in the hunt for the job.

"Flacco and Pickett are essentially 1A and 1B. The former's lack of reps this time of year suggested that Kevin Stefanski and company know what to expect from the 40-year-old. He knows the offense, has chemistry with several players on the roster already, and has nearly two decades of experience under his belt. This time of year simply isn't for him.

Pickett may very well be the guy Cleveland hopes wins the job come Week 1. In general, though, Pickett seemed to struggle the most during minicamp. The Browns belief in him hasn't wavered yet, however, and he'll be in the mix with Flacco to start."

Eagles fans saw a lot of that inconsistency during the regular season when he played. He had some nice throws against Washington, but had a back-breaking interception in the second deep in their own territory that might have cost the Eagles the game.

The next week against Dallas, he played a lot better as Pickett completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards and one touchdown. He unfortunately didn't finish the game as he got hurt and his backup, Tanner McKee, threw two touchdowns in his relief.

While Pickett didn't necessarily do anything to lose the backup job this offseason that led to him being traded, McKee showed enough for the Eagles' organization to have confidence in him to get the nod over Pickett. It was Pickett who ultimately finished the 2024 season as the backup, but that was more for formality as it became clear that McKee would earn the job in the offseason.

Many within Philadelphia will monitor the Browns quarterback job and will even get a chance to see Pickett in the brown and orange uniforms against the Eagles in preseason. It would be cool to see Pickett win the job and start for Cleveland, but there is two months before any decision has to be made.
