The Cleveland Browns entered a new chapter Monday after firing head coach Kevin Stefanski.

The move came one day after Cleveland’s 20-18 win over the Cincinnati Bengals that ended the Browns' season at 5-12. Speaking to the media, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders admitted the news caught him off guard. He said the team learned about Stefanski’s firing only moments before speaking publicly.

"We just found out a couple of seconds ago," Sanders said. "But, I think it's just overall the mentality, like, things are gonna happen. That's just how the league is. And moving forward, just focus on, you know, what we can improve, you know, individually, for the next head coach."

Now the organization begins another coaching search. Stefanski led Cleveland to two playoff appearances and won two AP NFL Coach of the Year awards, but the Browns struggled over the past two seasons. Stefanski's final record with the Browns was 45-56.

On the field Sunday, Sanders had a quiet performance. He completed 11 of 22 passes for 111 yards, lost a fumble and was sacked six times. Cleveland’s offense did not score a touchdown. Instead, the Browns relied on defense, with touchdowns coming on a 97-yard interception return by Devin Bush and a 47-yard fumble return by Sam Webb.

"He’s been real tough, real tough," Sanders said about Stefanski earlier. "It’s good, and I think I grew and learned a lot from him. This week we had a conversation just about things, and I feel like we grew to understand each other."

Sanders finishes his rookie season with mixed results. He appeared in eight games and completed 56.6 percent of his passes. He threw seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions while often facing heavy pressure. The Browns’ offense ranked near the bottom of the league in both yards and points, placing added scrutiny on the quarterback position.

Stefanski’s firing signals more change ahead. Cleveland will retain general manager Andrew Berry and search for a new head coach.

As Cleveland looks toward 2026, Sanders faces an important offseason. His development, paired with a new coaching staff, will shape the Browns’ direction after another difficult year.
