The Cleveland Browns have brought a familiar face back into the fold, signing kicker Lucas Havrisik to a reserve/futures contract.
This is not the first time that Havrisik and the Browns have come to terms on a deal. Cleveland signed the 24-year-old kicker to their practice squad back in August. The decision to do this was made following the team moving from Cade York and going with veteran Dustin Hopkins. Havrisik was essentially Cleveland’s break glass in case of emergency option in case Hopkins was ineffective and/or injured. The Los Angeles Rams would sign Havrisik to their active roster for a few games, making all eight field goal attempts and 19 of 22 extra points in nine games.
Regarding his place on the current roster, he is in about the same position as he was previously. Hopkins is under contract for one more year and is expected to resume his kicking duties next season. Should the best kicker since Phil Dawson not live up to his lofty title in 2024, the Browns could look at Havrisik, or anyone else for that matter, to take his place. This is not a bad idea, considering how volatile the kicker position is. Having an established option ready to go (if needed) is a good way to operate.
