The Cleveland Browns have kicked off training camp this week, but they’ve already suffered a notable loss — and it was completely out of their control.

The Browns are already without Pro Bowl linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah for the 2025 season due to a neck injury suffered last year. Now, they’ve taken another hit on the defensive side of the ball.

Browns LB Jordan Hicks announces retirement at start of training camp

Cleveland had excused veteran linebacker Jordan Hicks from the first two days of training camp for what was initially labeled as “personal reasons.” On Thursday, Hicks officially announced his retirement, bringing a 10-year NFL career to a close.

Hicks started all 12 games he played for the Browns last season, tallying 78 tackles and two sacks.

Hicks shares retirement message on Instagram:

“After 23 years of playing football, I’m officially retiring from the NFL. Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined — purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly, it showed me who I am outside the game. I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I’m proud of what I accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I’ve become because of it. To my teammates, coaches, fans, and most importantly my family… thank you for your unwavering support throughout this journey. I’m looking forward to this next season of life and all that it brings. I walk away with peace knowing I gave football all I had, and that the best is yet to come.”

With Hicks stepping away, the Browns’ linebacker unit is now headlined by veteran Jerome Baker and second-round rookie Carson Schwesinger. Devin Bush, Mohamoud Diabate, and Winston Reid are also expected to contribute in 2025.

Hicks had a strong and steady NFL career, playing four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, three with the Arizona Cardinals, two with the Minnesota Vikings, and wrapping up with the Browns. Now, with the 33-year-old retiring, Cleveland may need to add another veteran presence to the linebacker room.
