Browns vs Steelers Week 6: Remarkable Win

The Browns vs. Steelers Week 6 match-up was a gut check rather than just another AFC North game. The Steelers once again showed the Browns what dominance in this rivalry looks like on a cool Sunday in Pittsburgh, grinding out a 23–9 victory that highlighted all of Cleveland’s offensive weaknesses.

While Aaron Rodgers masterfully directed the game, breaking down Cleveland’s defense with poise and accuracy, rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was under constant pressure from the Steelers’ front line. It was just another chapter in the Browns’ exasperating story, characterized by lost opportunities, injuries, and the question that has plagued them for decades: when will things ever get better?

Steelers Hold Cleveland to 9 in 23-9 Victory

The offense of Cleveland, led by rookie Dillon Gabriel, produced 221 passing yards but no touchdowns. Gabriel’s line was unable to provide him any breathing room, and he was hit sixteen times and fired six times. The offense did little to support the Browns’ renowned defensive front. As this was going on, Rodgers distributed the ball among eight receivers, maintaining composure in the pocket and reliably converting third downs.

Chris Boswell’s three field goals (44, 50, and 48 yards) gave Pittsburgh the lead early on, 9 to 0. Rodgers struck Connor Heyward for a 12-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Rodgers found DK Metcalf in the end zone corner early in the fourth quarter for a 25-yard dagger. That fourth-quarter touchdown signaled the end of the Browns vs Steelers week 6 matchup.

Late in the game, Cleveland managed only three field goals (31, 53, and 32 yards), and each attempt to get inside Pittsburgh’s 20 was unsuccessful. They had their finest opportunity early in the fourth quarter, but once again settled for the chip shot after two incompletions and an 11-yard sack after defensive pass interference gave them a red zone trip.

Browns vs Steelers Week 6: Struggles, injuries, and missed opportunities

Cleveland couldn’t finish drives. Three times they made it to the red zone, but each time they left empty. Rookie Harold Fannin Jr. and Jerry Jeudy made the costly drops. In his first significant performance, Fannin led Cleveland with seven receptions for 81 yards. Jeudy caught five passes for forty-three yards. Quinshon Judkins failed to break away for a long run on the ground, only having 36 yards on 12 carries. There were no spectacular plays from Dylan Sampson or Jerome Ford.

Injuries exacerbated the problem. David Njoku hobbled off with a leg injury, cornerback Gage Larvadain left late after taking a hit to the head, and Jack Conklin left in the third quarter with a concussion.

Miles Killebrew left the Steelers’ side on a kickoff due to a knee injury. When necessary, Cleveland’s defense performed reasonably well, but Pittsburgh continued to capitalize on errors in penalties, sloppy play, and exhaustion in late-game scenarios. In a terrible turn of events, Pittsburgh scored its third field goal after gaining extra yardage from a Browns special teams penalty early in the second half.

Browns vs Steelers, Week 6 Conclusion

This Browns vs Steelers week 6 matchup was another poor performance in a pattern that is getting old: the Browns have scored 17 points or less for the eleventh consecutive game. They are now 0–3 in the AFC North and 1–5 overall after the loss. Meanwhile, this Browns vs Steelers week 6 win at home improves them to 4-1 and maintains their grasp on the division lead.

The Browns have now lost 22 straight games at home in Pittsburgh. Cleveland needs to get back together fast. Their next game is against Miami at home, where they absolutely need to find their offensive rhythm.  Additionally, coach Kevin Stefanski’s play calls and depth are put under extra strain when important players like Conklin and Njoku are lost.
