Buccaneers Hype Train Crashes in Season-Opening Loss

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the 2026 season opener carrying plenty of preseason hype.

Tampa Bay’s New-Look Team Falls Flat

Baker Mayfield and Vita Vea had both received new contracts before the season. Tampa Bay also revamped its defense with several notable additions.

Rookies Rueben Bain, Josiah Trotter, and Keionte Scott arrived with plenty of expectations. The Buccaneers also added Alex Anzalone, A’Shawn Robinson, and Al-Quadin Muhammad in free agency.

Then Sunday’s game arrived, and the hype train slammed into a brick wall.

Mayfield’s Turnovers Become a Major Problem

Mayfield struggled badly against the Bengals, turning the ball over several times.

That kind of performance made life difficult for an offense already struggling to find consistency. It also overshadowed many of the expectations surrounding Tampa Bay’s new-look roster.

Trotter Provides One Bright Spot

Trotter delivered a solid, if unspectacular, performance in his NFL debut.

He recorded the Buccaneers’ only sack while also returning a Joe Burrow interception for a pick-six. Unfortunately, Trotter’s performance was not enough to spark Tampa Bay’s defense.

Vea and Bain were largely invisible throughout the afternoon. The two combined for just one tackle, leaving Tampa Bay desperate for more impact up front.

Buccaneers’ Pass Rush Disappears

The Buccaneers’ pass rush was essentially nonexistent for much of the game.

That became particularly concerning for a defense that was supposed to represent one of Tampa Bay’s biggest improvements. The revamped unit simply did not produce enough pressure when it mattered.

The offense did not provide much encouragement, either. Zac Robinson’s scheme looked eerily similar to the offense Tampa Bay moved on from last season.

A Brutal Reality Check

Ultimately, this was a horrible showing from a team insisting it has been retooled.

The Buccaneers entered the season talking about competing at a championship level. Their opening performance instead exposed plenty of questions on both sides of the football.

Tampa Bay ultimately fell 33-27 to the Cincinnati Bengals. The hype surrounding this team now has a much different feel after just one game.
