Buccaneers Remain 'Most Likely' Destination for Chris Godwin

The Chris Godwin and Tampa Bay Buccaneers storyline only has a few weeks left to go before we get a good idea of the path forward for both, with free agency coming up on the horizon.

With Godwin coming off a nasty ankle injury that ended his season in Week 7 as he was flying to start the year (576 yards, five touchdowns on seven games), he is also a free agent.

Spotrac.com has his market value set at $22.5 million APY, and for a player coming off an injury, that is likely a little high, but there's no doubt that there will be a host of teams that will be willing to part ways with that kind of cash.

But despite the interest of other teams, for CBS Sports' Jared Dubin, the most logical move is that Godwin doesn't move at all.

"The Bucs are the most obvious and best landing spot," Dubin writes. "There's a reason that they and Godwin mutually agreed to push back the void date on his contract, and it's likely because they each want to find a way to work out a long-term deal. Continuing to play alongside Mike Evans and working as one of Baker Mayfield's top two targets seems like the most likely result for Godwin."

It does seem like the "right" thing to do for the Buccaneers to get Godwin's future sorted, but as we know, the NFL is a results and money business.

If Tampa doesn't want to offer over $20 million APY, and another team does, we get the sense that Todd Bowles won't stand in his way.

The Buccaneers aren't exactly "set" at the receiver position, and the goodwill and faith that both might have towards each other will hopefully get this situation sorted out before free agency starts.

If not, then buckle up, my friends.
