Bucs sign defensive tackle, cut another

Matterson played collegiately at the University of Texas San Antonio where he played from 2018 to 2023. Over that time, he played in 59 games, amassing 101 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. In his final year in college, he set career highs in tackles for loss (6) and sacks (5).

Bucs Add Depth To Defensive Line

Matterson joins a defensive line unit that looks to be fairly set as the team is just over a week out from cut-down day. The team will likely carry no more than six interior defensive linemen. Five of those spots appear to be locked up between Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey, Logan Hall, Greg Gaines and Will Gholston. Both C.J. Brewer and Earnest Brown IV have had good showings in camp and preseason as well as they fight for a potential sixth spot. Matterson will also likely slot in behind rookie Judge Culpepper who many Bucs fans are excited about due to him being the son of former Bucs defensive lineman Brad Culpepper.

Bucs Cut Injured Player

The corresponding move the team made was to cut defensive lineman Eric Banks with an injury designation. Banks played in the Bucs first preseason game, generating two quarterback pressures but failing to record a tackle. Prior to joining the Bucs he played in six games across three seasons with the Cardinals from 2021-2023. Banks was in the mix with Brewer and Brown for a possible roster spot prior to his release.
