The hits keep on coming for the Bucs. With wide receiver Chris Godwin and left tackle Tristan Wirfs both still not participating in team activities while rehabbing injuries, rookie outside linebacker David Walker out for the season with a torn ACL, and the news earlier today that they also lost rookie defensive back J.J. Roberts for the season, Tampa Bay could ill-afford another injury to an expected key contributor.
And yet, that is exactly what happened on their second offensive drive of the game when wide receiver Jalen McMillan got hurt in the first quarter.
Following an interception by cornerback Zyon McCollum to set the Tampa Bay offense up in advantageous field position, Tampa Bay’s offense was facing a third-and-6 on the Steelers’ 46 when quarterback Teddy Bridgewater left a pass hanging up on a deep in-breaker to McMillan. The second-year receiver went up over the rim and made an impressive grab – his second such catch of the preseason – to pick up 18 yards and a first down.
But as McMillan started to come back to the ground, Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. cleared his legs from under him making the tackle and McMillan fell onto his neck and back. The fall knocked McMillan out of the game and the training staff had to come out on the field to tend to him. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but would soon be carted to the locker room.

The Buccaneers have announced that McMillan is out for the remainder of the game, officially listing him with a back injury while also noting he is being evaluated for a concussion.
After coming on strong at the end of the 2024 season, Jalen McMillan was having an impressive camp. Bucs leadership has been impressed with his improved hands and physicality, also noting he was playing faster than his rookie year. McMillan finished last year catching 24 passes for 316 yards and eight touchdowns over the last five games of the season.
He figures to be a big part of the team’s offense this year, pairing with veteran Mike Evans and first-round draft pick Emeka Egbuka to help keep the passing attack dangerous while Chris Godwin works back from an ankle injury that ended his 2024 campaign prematurely.
Hopefully McMillan checks out okay and will be ready to go in Week 1 at Atlanta versus the NFC South rival Falcons.
