Caleb Williams Gets Honest About Oklahoma Drama — 'I Was the Best'

When quarterbacks find themselves under heavy pressure, the stress can become overwhelming. In those intense moments, many players struggle to maintain their composure, often leading them to speak with raw honesty and making it nearly impossible to conceal their true emotions.

Caleb Williams entered his college career as a highly talented yet extremely young athlete. He carried an extraordinary level of self-belief and possessed very little patience for riding the bench. Long before he took over as the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears, that fierce competitive spirit already defined him.His time at Oklahoma proved far from straightforward.

The experience was filled with raw emotion and high-stakes tension. Looking back, Williams now openly acknowledges that his approach stemmed from an unshakable conviction that waiting behind another quarterback was simply not in his future.

During an appearance on The Pivot Podcast on April 20, 2024, the Bears quarterback reflected candidly on the challenges of his freshman season with the Sooners in 2021. His message to listeners was direct and unfiltered.

From the very beginning, he felt certain he deserved to be the starter ahead of Spencer Rattler.

“I was the best (QB) in the country. I told many people before I went there that I was going to start.”

That statement reflects more than mere confidence—it reveals deep conviction. Such strong belief helps explain why Williams grew frustrated so rapidly during his early days in Norman. He recalled repeatedly pressing head coach Lincoln Riley for specific guidance on what it would take to win the starting job. The response remained consistent: focus on preparation and keep working.

Yet inside, Williams was convinced he had already proven himself. He felt he had clearly outplayed Rattler during spring practices. The real problem, however, was the lack of meaningful opportunities. He rarely received consistent first-team repetitions, a situation that only heightened the growing frustration.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Williams refused to give up or lose focus. Instead, he committed even harder to his craft. Every single rep became important, and every practice moment turned into vital preparation for the opportunity he trusted would eventually arrive.

That long-awaited moment finally came in October 2021 during the Red River Showdown. With Oklahoma trailing Texas 35-17, Riley made the bold decision to insert Williams into the game. The young quarterback responded immediately, delivering sharp passes, dynamic runs, and commanding presence on the field. Oklahoma mounted a remarkable comeback, ultimately winning the thrilling contest 55-48.

That standout performance represented far more than a simple spark. It marked a decisive takeover of the quarterback position. From that point forward, the job belonged to Williams. Rattler eventually transferred elsewhere, while Williams channeled that same drive and intensity into an extraordinary journey. He transferred to USC, captured the Heisman Trophy, and was selected as the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.

Even after reaching the professional level, Williams has maintained that same competitive edge. In the 2025 season, he played a pivotal role in guiding the Bears to an impressive 11-6 record. He threw for 3,942 passing yards, recorded 27 touchdowns against just seven interceptions, and engineered six fourth-quarter comebacks, according to Pro Football Reference.

Williams’ early struggles at Oklahoma ultimately served as powerful fuel rather than a setback. Once given the chance to prove himself, he seized the opportunity fully and never looked back, turning doubt and frustration into the foundation for a promising NFL career.
