Cam Akers officially signs with the New Orleans Saints. Previously known as the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl-winning running back. The Los Angeles Rams selected Akers in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he made an immediate impression during his rookie season. His reputation as a budding star was cemented by his outstanding performance in the 2020 playoffs, especially against Seattle. After tearing his left Achilles in 2023, he spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans in 2024.

Cam Akers Saints Contract

Akers and the New Orleans Saints agreed to a two-year deal. A $3 million signing bonus and up to $1 million in incentives based on rushing yards and touchdown totals were added to the $7.5 million deal. Akers chose New Orleans because of the opportunity and the scheme fit, according to his agent, David Mulugheta, who confirmed the agreement.

Why the Saints

The Saints required an explosive running back who could either spell or complement Kamara. Despite prior injury setbacks, Cam Akers has demonstrated his ability to recover and perform well under pressure. Essential factors that led to the signing include significant issues with Kamara’s workload and suspension record. A strong back with pass-blocking abilities is required. Additionally, Akers’ potential as a previous starter with postseason experience was ultimately why the Saints signed Akers.

Fit In Saints’ Offense

With new Head coach Kellen Moore in town, the New Orleans Saints offense will look drastically different. Moore has traditionally used multiple running backs in his offensive scheme. Therefore, the addition of Akers makes sense in football terms. Akers brings acceleration and vision, especially when running stretch plays, lining up in the shotgun, or catching passes on third down due to his versatility. I’m hoping that Akers will distribute early-down responsibilities and manage short-yardage and goal-line situations.

Impact on the Saints Roster

The Cam Akers signing will change the Saints’ depth chart. Ty’Son Williams and Jamaal Williams might have smaller responsibilities. Rookie backs may move to the practice squad or special teams. Beneficially, Akers’ deal is incentive-based and front-loaded, with cap flexibility still in place. If the Saints’ young quarterbacks do not work out, they could be in a position to sign one.

Conclusion

The Saints have flexibility thanks to Cam Akers’ deal. He is a strong contender for an extension if he returns to form. Otherwise, they can split up with little to no cap repercussions. His NFL future will depend on how well he performs in the 2025 season. The Saints might have one of the most exciting backfields in the NFC if he gets back to his old level and plays well next to Alvin Kamara. It’s unclear if this will help them make the playoffs, but there are many reasons for fans to be hopeful.
