Can Daniel Jones capitalize on Malik Nabers' breakout game?

The New York Giants may have lost to the Washington Commanders in Week 2, but fans can take one crucial silver lining from Sunday: rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers is a legitimate top receiver.

The Giants fell 21-18 to division foe Washington, the first time it's lost to the Commanders since late in the 2021 season.

Nabers could've converted a crucial fourth down play late in regulation that might've given New York a chance to lead but he devastatingly dropped it.

But his 127 yards on 10 receptions and his first career NFL touchdown provided some solace that things could eventually turn around in the Big Apple. But will quarterback Daniel Jones hamper that revival or help it along?

Jones threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns, the first time he's done so since a Week 2 victory over Arizona in 2023. Perhaps even more encouraging for the Giants is the fact that he didn't throw an interception.

Jones has been wildly inconsistent in his six-year career, peaking in 2022 with a road playoff victory but then falling to an ACL tear last season.

Whether he's finally turning a corner again with a refreshed receiving core is yet to be seen, but he'll need to replicate and improve upon Sunday's performance if he wants to avoid being released in 2025.

Jones signed a four-year, $160 million extension ($40 million AAV) prior to the 2023 season but New York has an escape hatch after this season.

However, if he were to be injured and fail a physical in 2025, he would be owed $23 million in guaranteed money, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Nabers and other young receivers like Wan'Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt provide Jones with zero excuses for not rectifying passing mistakes of the past.

While the young receivers have more time in their careers to succeed, Jones' clock has been ticking and ticking and ticking. Time to put up or get out.
