To say the San Francisco 49ers have their share of doubters heading into the 2025 NFL season would be an understatement. Of course, that skepticism is understandable, given the significant roster turnover that occurred this offseason.
Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport recently highlighted one question every NFL team must answer during the 2025 preseason. For the 49ers, it's this: Can San Francisco survive their wild offseason?
That offseason saw the departures of several key defensive contributors, including defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, cornerback Charvarius Ward, and safety Talanoa Hufanga. The defensive front has undergone a massive revamp, with defensive end Nick Bosa among the few holdovers.
With quarterback Brock Purdy due for a massive payday, San Francisco pivoted its roster-building approach, placing a greater emphasis on youth and cost-effective talent. The 49ers have drafted 19 players over the past two seasons, including 11 in this year's class. They hope the young talent can contribute immediately and offset the offseason losses.
"There are major questions at defensive tackle. On the offensive line," Davenport wrote. "At wide receiver—especially with Juan Jennings banged up, Brandon Aiyuk working his way back from an ACL tear, and Deebo Samuel gone.
"Core players like quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end George Kittle, and edge-rusher Nick Bosa are still in Santa Clara, but there isn't a team in the league that lost more talent this offseason than the Niners."
The preseason will be critical in evaluating whether San Francisco's younger players can step up and provide the depth needed to reestablish itself as a contender.
"And given the annually high expectations in San Francisco, Shanahan has his work cut out for him," Davenport added.
The 49ers have faced adversity before and thrived. Now, they'll look to prove once again that their championship window remains wide open despite an offseason of change.
